The Lovejoy Local Break-Down: Instruments and gear

The instrument in which an artist plays their music on rarely gets the same treatment as the artist themselves – whether it’s respect, or even just acknowledgment. Not to sound like experts when we are in fact not, but different guitars produce greatly varying sounds, changing even the smallest of tones that you may not be able to single-out can shift the way a riff or a melody sound. Even more so, each instrument – whether it’s a guitar, a bass, or a drum kit – has its own identity to an artist. The instrument may be designated to only be used in the studio, when writing, playing live shows due to the sound, over even the way it makes an artist feels.

Hence, a well-deserved instrument spotlight for Lovejoy. Find out exactly what Lovejoy play.

Bassist Ash Kabosu has two Custom Shop Jazz Basses from Fender. The custom nature of the bass allows for different variations in colour and appearances, but also in the shape and dimensions of the bass, therefore changing the tone and resonance of the sound.

When playing the electric guitar – mainly in live settings or when recording – vocalist and guitarist Will Gold (aka: Wilbur Soot) prefers a Fender Telecaster, of which he has a few. However, when Gold is writing songs, he primarily sticks to his acoustic guitar by Taylor.

Clearly a band of Fender lovers, lead guitarist Joe Goldsmith has seemed to be favouring hisJohnny Marr Signature Jaguar Fender, or an even newer Kurt Cobain signature Jag-Stang. Made from the same materials, both guitars would emit a similar tone.

Drummer Mark Boardman needs a drum kit that can keep up with his varying playing techniques, and the sounds he needs the kit to emit. When playing, he uses his DW Drums Collector’s Series with his own Meinl cymbals. However, when writing with the band in their rehersal space, he uses his Roland Electronic Drum Kit.
